Celebrate Your Family at Lanham Skate Center

November 9, 2017 by Writers

Halloween is over, and that means it’s almost time for our favorite holiday here at Lanham Skate Center. No, not Thanksgiving–we’re talking about National Family Week, November 19th through 25th! Here are some of our favorite ways to spend time together as a family.

Cook Up Some Fun

The holidays are all about food, and that can mean a lot of time stuck inside, parents slaving away over a hot stove while kids wander at loose ends. Why not get the whole family involved? Kids can help measure, prepare ingredients, read recipes, stir mixes, and of course sample goodies for quality. Kids can also help at the store. Have them plot out your route, keep track of the list, or even compare prices and coupons. family timeThink how proud everyone will be when you recount your little chef’s contribution to holiday meals!

Skate and Play

When you’re ready to get out of the house a bit, what about a visit to Lanham? Check out our open skate hours, or even get the family together for lessons! Everyone can get some exercise to help ward off the holiday blues and really earn all those holiday goodies. If the great outdoors is your thing, the Lanham area is host to great hiking and biking trails. Even your own backyard or neighborhood can be a source of family fun–consider hosting your own picnics, backyard bonfires, or just long walks around your neighborhood.

No matter how you choose to celebrate your family, remember that the important part is to enjoy each other’s company. We hope your family will join ours at Lanham Skate Center!

Skate like a Pro!

June 26, 2017 by Writers

Roller skating is a great way to get exercise–you can burn about 482 calories an hour on quad skates! It’s good for your legs, back, lungs, and heart. It’s also a super fun social activity. But what if you don’t know how to skate, or just aren’t sure about your technique? Here are some easy tips to get you started.

  • Make Sure Your Skates Fit! Skates that are too tight or too loose will not help you at all. Talk to an employee for help getting the right skates for you.
  • Lean Forward! It’s natural to lean back when you feel you’re about to fall over, but this isn’t always helpful. Actually, the best way to keep your balance on roller skates is to bend your knees like you’re sitting on an invisible chair, and lean forward. A lower center of gravity will help keep you upright. roller skate lessons
  • Learn How to Fall! It’s bound to happen, so you’d best know how to do is safely. Most times when we fall, we instinctively try to catch ourselves with our hands. This can seriously damage your wrists, hands, and fingers. Lanham Skate Center skate lessons are a great place to learn more about how to fall safely.
  • Practice Regularly! Just like with any sport or activity, the more you work at it the better you’ll get. Check our hours for times that work best for you.
  • Relax! The biggest hurdle to getting better at skating is usually our own fears. Relax and focus on having fun, and you’ll suddenly find it much easier!

Lanham Skate Center lessons allow you to practice your skills and learn new ones in a safe, fun, non-judgemental atmosphere. Sign up today and let’s get you started on the road to being a great skater!

Skate Through The Ages

June 16, 2017 by Writers

Have you ever stopped and wondered about the history of roller skating? How did the roller skate become what it is today? Nowadays you can get the skate designed to turn more sharply roll faster than others. However the history of roller skating isn’t all about equipment; it’s also entwined with the history of music. If you come to Lanham Skate Center you might remember the music you were listening to while skating. Music sets the tone at the skating rink. Typically we play top 40’s and other popular music, but we enjoy mixing in the oldies as well. For the kids skating, these may be songs they’ve never even heard. What was your favorite era of skating music?

Exciting Dancing-Disco

In the early 1800’s, Monsieur Petitbled patented the first ever roller skate. It was very simple, consisting of only three wheels and no way to turn. These three-wheel inline skates just weren’t getting the job done, so James Leonard Plimpton came in and redesigned the simple roller skate. This new design gave the skater the ability to turn, but skills like jam skating were still a long way off.

The 70’s and 80’s were all about disco skating. These were the decades when the disco ball made its presence known in skating rinks. People would come from all over town to participate in a fun, athletic dance skating. The music was loud and energetic, with colorful lights dancing along with the skaters. Some familiar songs in this era were Double Dutch Bus, Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough, and Funkytown.

The 90’s brought back the inline skate, and with it competitive skating. The music people skated to in the 90’s consisted of plenty of Salt-N-Pepa and Mariah Carey. And who can forget about The Spice Girls and The Beastie Boys? These were fun days of skating where there was plenty of dancing, but different skating levels were mastered, which raised the level of competition in the rink.

To get a little taste of some of the different eras of skating come in to Lanham Skate Center. Summer fun is just getting started, and you can request your favorite tunes anytime you skate!
